This project is a continuation of a previous project with the Mawubuye
Land Rights Forum. Mawubuye is being capacity built by TCOE (Trust for
Community Outreach and Education), the purpose of the capacity building
being to enable poor people in the rural areas to fight for land rights
such as the access to land and water. When this project has been finally
implemented, Mawubuye will operate in 13 districts in the Western Cape,
and during the project the organisation is expected to train local
leaders and mobilise poor farm workers, landless peasants, labourers and
others, to enable them to fight together to ensure that the rural poor
are able to live of their own land and crops.
The other part of the project is meant to build the foundation for a
national alliance of organisations representing the rights of the poor
in relation to land-, water-, and fishing rights. The national alliance
is to come up with alternatives to the present land- and agricultural
reform. Successful capacity building of Mawubuye will allow the
organisation to become an independent force in the national alliance.
Africa Contact contributes 3.000.000 Danish Kroner to the project.
