Gender and Water

Skrevet 9 December 2008

Women remain oppressed and exploited in all our countries and across our planet. The denial of water for dignity and for production of life, one of the most basic needs is still inaccessible to most women and children.

Rural women are responsible for half of the world’s food production, and produce between 60 and 80% of the food in most developing countries.

Women are the main producers of the world’s staple crops (rice, wheat, maize) which provide up to 90% or the rural poor’s food intake.

In South-East Asia, women provide up to 90% of the labour for rice cultivation.
